Get Ready

Funding options come in all shapes and sizes and the donors are looking for you. There are three main source categories for funding.

Federal & State

Federal and local governments manage a wide variety of funding resources for teachers. Search for funds in your state or from government organizations like NSF.

Corporate & Organizational

Companies and non-government organizations often have grants available for educators and are just waiting to be asked. Here are a few examples:

Crowdfunding

Share your classroom needs on a crowdfunding platform and accept donations from generous donors in your community and around the world. Did you know that you can purchase PocketLab projects through Carolina Biological on DonorsChoose? Learn more.

Get Set

Clifton Roozeboom, co-founder at PocketLab is an experienced grant writer. In fact, PocketLab was originally started with the help of grants. Here are his top tips to apply for classroom funding and grants.

1. Watch those deadlines

2. Read the RFP carefully

3. Get expert feedback

4. Be Specific

Most grant applications require you to provide details on the supplies or project the funds will be applied to. We recommend Powered by PocketLab projects and PocketLab Bundles as a comprehensive way to engage your students and supply your classroom or STEM department.

Success stories from other educators can inspire and inform you to make it happen for your classroom. Here is one of our favorites.

LEOLA RUTHERFORD RAISED $2,200

Leola Rutherford, sixth grade STEM teacher at Girdwood K8 School in Anchorage, Alaska, saw how much her students enjoyed a PocketLab sensor she acquired as part of a training, so she set up a campaign through DonorsChoose to provide them with a class set.

She raised $2200 through the generosity of DonorsChoose contributors and Leola's students now enjoy hands-on student science engagement with PocketLab sensors.

"It is humbling how generous people can be. Share your dreams and invite others to support your passion for scientific exploration." – Leola
