Let's talk about how we can strengthen and diversify the science and technology-minded graduates by amplifying underrepresented and marginalized voices within STEM. 

 

Joy Kiano  Global Ambassador | N'Gen TV Africa

N*Gen (pronounced “engine”) is a next-generation science TV show for young learners in Africa, designed to encourage a culture of curiosity and discovery, model holistic ways of learning, and promote positive gender norms. The program is a compilation of educational segments, delivered by charismatic teachers, exciting animations, fun quizzes, and experiments, as well as tips for healthy living.

Season 1 comprises 13 broadcast half-hour episodes and is currently broadcast in multiple countries in Africa, including Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, as well as the US and the Caribbean via The Africa Channel.

 

Dr. Robbie Melton  Associate Vice President | Tennessee State University Global SMART Technology Innovation Center

Dr. Robbie Melton serves as a global researcher and international consultant for Emerging IOE (“The Internet of Everything”) Smart Mobile Technology of mobile devices, smart phone-tablets, wearables, smart gadgets and tools, and mixed reality of VR and AR. She formerly served as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Emerging Technologies for the Tennessee Board of Regents and the primary developer and chief administrator for the system-wide Regents Online Degree Programs.

 

Jesus Soriano  Program Director | National Science Foundation

Jesus Soriano is Program Director for the NSF's Partnerships for Innovation program. Previously, Jesus served as Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program director since 2012 covering Biomedical and Smart Health Technologies. He joined NSF after 20 years of international experience in executive leadership in the biopharmaceutical and non-profit sectors, start-up formation and funding, technology commercialization, and academic teaching and research.

Lakshmi Warrier  Science Teacher | Dougherty Valley High School

Lakshmi is a high school science teacher at Dougherty Valley High School, one of four high schools in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. She taught Honors Anatomy and Physiology in the past, and currently teaches Biology and AP Biology. She is the advisor for diverse high school clubs that encourage students to find their voice through service learning, and cultural and STEM-based explorations. She received her M.S. in Genetic Counseling from UC Irvine, and has practiced as a clinical and research genetic counselor before switching to K-12 education. She completed her Teaching Credential with Saint Mary’s College of California, Moraga, with a strong emphasis on Social Justice and Equity in education.
