The Science of Magic

Our mission at PocketLab is to remove barriers to more engaged science classroom.

What You’ll Learn

In this high-energy professional development session with Emmy-winning educator and TV host Steve Spangler, you’ll discover how to "crash" the magic show to reveal the hard science hidden behind the spectacle. You’ll learn how to use Steve’s famous, high-impact demonstrations to hook student curiosity and then use real-time data to transform that "wow" moment into deep, inquiry-based learning.

You will be prepared to have your students:

  • Capture the "Wow" – Use famous, jaw-dropping demonstrations to hook student curiosity and create an immediate "need to know" in the classroom.
  • Reveal the "How" – Go behind the curtain of the magic trick to expose the scientific principles at play using real-time sensor data and evidence-based analysis.
  • Transform Amazement into Inquiry – Guide students as they turn "How did he do that?!" into testable hypotheses and structured scientific investigations.
  • Collect and Analyze Data – Use PocketLab sensors to measure the invisible forces—such as pressure, motion, and energy—that make the "magic" possible.
  • Replicate with Ease – Implement these same high-engagement demos in your own classroom using everyday materials and digitally assignable lesson guides.
